Rabat – On the sidelines of the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) currently being held from November 30 to December 12 in Dubai, the Emirati High-Level Climate Champion (CHN), Razan Al Mubarak, said that Morocco is leading the way for countries in the Middle East and Africa region in climate action.
“The countries of our region and Africa should be incredibly proud of Morocco’s inspiring vision and take advantage of it as an example to follow,” thanks to its leadership and pioneering commitment to tackling climate change, Al Mubarak said on Sunday during the event organized by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection.
Al Mubarak revealed that speaking at an event organized by Morocco in partnership with CGEM and UNIDO has “many positive connotations,” recalling CHN’s role which was made operational in Marrakech during COP22 in 2016.
Back then, the international community recognized that “action on climate change that does not include people, civil society, and business will go unheeded,” she explained.

Non-state players are essential for any transformation, be it in the agricultural or energy sectors, she added.
Speaking from a regional perspective, she also recognized and appreciated the efforts of the Moroccan people and government for embracing the climate change agenda by leading by example rather than just talking the talk.
Al Mubarak continued by saying that when Morocco published its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in 2016, it was one of the few nations that, based on climate statistics, was already in compliance with the Goal of limiting temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
In her closing remarks, the Emirati representative acknowledged that if climate change has already occurred, then “the beginning of the implementation of measures to regulate what causes this climate change” should reassure the world.
