Fasting and Fit: How to Stay Healthy in the Holy Month

Rabat – While fasting hours during the Holy Month may seem daunting, they offer a unique opportunity to reset and prioritize overall well-being.

Consider it a full-body, mind-body, and soul detox.

For Muslim observers of Ramadan, hopefully, this can be a useful guide.

Happy belly, happy day

First and foremost, let’s talk about nourishment.

Your pre-dawn meal, suhur, starts as your fuel for the day. It provides the framework for maintaining energy levels all day long.

Choose complex carbs like oats and whole grains when combined with meals high in protein, such as yogurt or eggs.

Remember that staying hydrated is essential. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration during the fasting hours.

Come sunset, as the call to prayer rings out, it’s time for iftar, or breaking the fast.

Moderation is crucial, even if there may be a strong urge to overindulge in sumptuous feasts.

To restore nutrients, start with dates and water. Then, proceed to a balanced dinner that includes veggies, healthy fats, and lean meats.

Embrace the spirit of sharing by partaking in communal iftars, but be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating.

How to stay fit and fabulous

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room that no one wants to do while fasting; exercise.

Considering the physical requirements of fasting, the idea of continuing an active lifestyle throughout Ramadan may seem counterintuitive.

However, adding mild to moderate exercise can be helpful in increasing vitality and elevating your mood.

To get the advantages without going overboard, consider doing low-impact exercises like yoga, swimming, or brisk walking during times when you aren’t fasting.

During Ramadan, Faisal Abdalla, a dedicated Muslim fitness coach, maintains his commitment to fasting while continuing his rigorous training routine.

In his interview with Business Insider, he highlighted his focus on incorporating ample protein into his diet and adjusting his workout routine by extending rest periods.

However, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining consistency in his training, striving to keep it as normal as possible despite the challenges presented by fasting during this holy month.

How to master your mind

Beyond physical health, prioritizing mental and emotional well-being is equally crucial.

To foster inner serenity and spiritual development, try to focus on this time as a period for introspection, prayer, and meditation.

Aim for seven to eight hours of high-quality sleep every night, as restorative rest depends on a regular sleep pattern.

Giving yourself a little indulgence can make you feel better and push through the mental battle. Whether that be a shopping spree where “shopping is your cardio,” or a Netflix binge at the end of a fast, these little treats are key.

Self-care routines are additionally crucial to keeping a happy outlook throughout Ramadan, whether they involve taking a stroll around the neighborhood market or treating yourself to a spa day.

Ramadan “tastes” different when you are putting your health and well-being first. By feeding your body healthily, exercising in moderation, and tending to your soul through introspection and self-care, you cannot not only survive but thrive in this holy season.

As it’s just around the corner, what steps will you take to maintain your health and vitality beyond Ramadan?
