Rabat – In the much-anticipated clash of continental giants between Cameroon and Nigeria, it is logically the in-form and defensively solid Nigerian Super Eagles who prevailed tonight.
The Nigerians secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over the Indomitable Lions and put an end to the AFCON aspirations of a seemingly resurgent Cameroonian side following their inspirational display against the Gambia in their final group game.
The first goal came in the 37th minute when Nigeria’s talismanic striker Osimhen set up Lookman for a close-range shot.
The first half was marked by a lack of clear-cut opportunities, with both teams struggling to break down each other’s defenses.
The match had its fair share of drama. In the 10th minute, Nigeria was heading for an early lead, but VAR intervened to review the goal for a possible offside and ended up disallowing it. Desperate to find an equalizer, Cameroon called on the services of their talismanic forward Vincent Aboubakar, who came off the bench in the 52nd minute.
However, the Indomitable Lions’ unrelenting attacking efforts were repeatedly frustrated by Nigeria’s solid defensive display.
Wooh’s foul on Onyeka in the 52nd minute led to a dangerous free-kick for Nigeria, but Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Ondoa, managed to keep the scoreline at 1-0.
Cameroon struggled to find a way past Nigeria’s defense, often resorting to long balls and crosses, but failed to trouble Nwabali in Nigeria’s goal.
Despite a late surge from Cameroon, Nigeria held firm to secure the 2-0 victory and advance to the quarterfinals. Osimhen’s impact was undeniable as the Napoli striker yet again set up Lookman to bring comfort to the Super Eagles with a second goal that effectively brushed off the increasingly rallying Cameroonian Lions in search of a late equalizer.
