Rabat – The Italian government has given the green light to allocate funds for a feasibility study on the “Green Corridor,” a project aimed at streamlining the transportation of green hydrogen from Morocco to the port of Trieste.
This initiative, championed by Italian Deputy Debora Serracchiani of the Democratic Party, marks a turning point for both nations.
For Italy, it paves the way for transforming Trieste into a central hub for distributing energy raw materials across Central and Eastern Europe via the Transalpine pipeline, ultimately fostering a greener and more integrated European energy strategy.
Serracchiani emphasized the significance of this initiative, linking the Green Corridor to the broader North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley project. The latter is a cross-border initiative resulting from an agreement among the autonomous regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Croatia, and Slovenia.
But the significance goes beyond geography. Morocco, already attracting investments from countries like Germany and the Netherlands for its research and commitment to sustainable energy processes, is poised to become a major player in the Mediterranean region.
Serracchiani emphasizes this crucial role, highlighting Morocco’s potential as a key source of clean energy not just for Italy, but for the entire continent.
According to sources, the Green Corridor signifies, for Italy, both a substantial leap forward in sustainable energy and an opportunity to strengthen commercial ties with Morocco.
The project aims to foster synergies between the port and intermodal logistics systems of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, contributing to a greener and more integrated energy strategy at the European level.
