Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced its decision to increase the prize money for the winner of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations to $7 million, citing its commitment to the development of African football.

In a report published today, CAF noted a 40% increase in the prize money for the winner of the 34th edition of the upcoming AFCON, to be held in Cote d’Ivoire on January 13.

“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions,” CAF President Patrice Motsepe said in a statement.

“We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to USD 7 000 000 which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money,” he added, stressing that “a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations.”

This “handsome” sum of money exceeds that of the defending champions Senegal in the previous edition, where they received $4.5 million.

The runners-up will take home $4 million, each semi-finalist will receive $2.5 million, and each of the four quarter-finalists $1.3 million.

Looking ahead to bring home a second title, the Atlas Lions will play in Group F alongside Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia.

On January 17, Morocco’s Atlas Lions will start their AFCON adventure against the Taifa Stars, the Tanzanian national football team.

The Atlas Lions’ following group matches will be against DR Congo on January 21 and Zambia on January 24, with all the games being played at the San Pedro Stadium.
