Rabat – The Ghanaian national football team will take on its Cape Verdean opponent in the first group stage match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on January 14.
The match will begin at 9:00 p.m. Moroccan Time at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium in the capital city of Abidjan, and will be broadcast both on the Sky Sports Football British channel and the Sky Go application.
This year marks Ghana’s 24th appearance in the African Cup, with four titles under its belt. The Black Stars won their first title in 1963, then other silverware followed in 1965, 1978, and 1982.
Its participation in the latest AFCON edition saw the squad disqualified following the group stage matches with two losses to Morocco and Comoros, and one draw against Gabon.
Ghana is now in Group B competing with Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.
Qualified as runners-up from Group B of the AFCON qualifications, Cape Verde will participate for the fourth time, hoping to surpass their 2013 achievement in the same tournament.
The team had successfully qualified for the quarter-finals with 5 points alongside South Africa as the host. However, they were disqualified due to a 2-0 defeat against Ghana.
Cape Verdean head coach Bubista has called up 25 players to represent the country, each playing for 25 different clubs around the world.
