Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DSGT) handed Spanish police information, allowing them to abort a drug trafficking operation and seize 1,500 kilograms of cocaine on January 12.
During the joint operation between Spanish national police and the civil guard, Spain arrested three crew members in waters near the coast of Gran Canaria.
“The arrest of these three individuals and the interception of the boat occurred thanks to the joint monitoring and surveillance of both law enforcement bodies and information provided by Morocco’s Directorate General of Surveillance (DGST),” Spanish news outlet El Diario reported.
Spanish police detected the boat and launched a chase operation, which succeeded in arresting the crew members and seizing over 1,564 kilograms of cocaine distributed throughout 64 packages.
This is not the first time Morocco has assisted international partners in arresting suspects involved in transnational crime crimes.
In 2022, Morocco’s DGST provided information that helped Spanish police arrest a “very extremist” individual who planned to commit an attack in the city of Murcia, during the Remembrance Day in the country. Morocco has carried out similar collaborations with Spanish security services in different fields, including counterterrorism and the fight against drug trafficking.
The two countries share good diplomatic ties as well as cooperation in various sectors, including trade.
The Spanish government has frequently emphasized the importance of boosting this cooperation. Earlier this month, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that ties between Rabat and Madrid “reached a high level of strength and trust.”
These ties “will always be a priority” for Spain, he said, adding that he believes that the two countries “must continue to consolidate” these relations.
