Rabat – Perpignan Airport was evacuated on Tuesday morning following reports indicating that a passenger was carrying explosives in his luggage.
Following the report, airport authorities evacuated approximately 200 individuals, including 150 travelers who were preparing to board a Ryanair flight bound for Agadir, Morocco.
According to French media reports, the suspicious contents of the carry-on bag were detected during routine security screening. The owner of the luggage, identified as an Italian national, was taken under custody for questioning.
“The shape of the suspicious objects resembles explosives, with wiring,” said a police source familiar with the investigation.
Bomb disposal experts from Montpellier were summoned to the scene to assess and neutralize the potential threat.
In the afternoon, bomb disposal experts from Montpellier arrived at the scene. After entering the terminal with a vehicle, they removed the luggage to neutralize it away from the facilities.
Around 12:15 PM, the suitcase was destroyed by an explosion. At this time, it is not precisely known what it contained.
After the luggage was removed from the airport premises, the airport lockdown was lifted. Passengers bound for Agadir were able to board after undergoing baggage re-screening.
