Fez – After initially announcing his resignation to take a step back from coaching Wydad Casablanca (WAC), Faouzi Benzarti has decided to continue his mission as the head coach of the Moroccan giant.
The news concerning this “change of heart” came on Thursday, and was announced by Wydad’s spokesperson Mohammed Talal, on the club’s official website.
Wydad, currently ranking 5th in Morocco’s championship with only 28 points, suffered its 6th defeat this season in the Botola Pro league against JS Soualem (3-1) on Wednesday evening.
This marked a new fall which pushed the Wydad Reds further into crisis.
Benzarti announced his initial decision to resign during a press conference after a Wydad match which took place at the Stade El Bachir in Mohammedia. The Reds had produced poor results in the Championship League.
While everyone was waiting for the Tunisian coach’s departure to be made official, WAC spokesperson Mohammed Talal announced on February 15, that Benzarti has rescinded his resignation, and will continue his mission as head coach of Wydad.
The new decision was made following a meeting held with members of the WAC management board, said the club’s website.
Since his arrival at Wydad, Faouzi Benzarti has had a record of 5 defeats, 3 draws and 2 victories.
The 68-year-old coach is considered one of the most accomplished football managers in the world due to his impressive portfolio with 9 Tunisian championships, 2 CAF Cups, 1 CAF Champions League, 1 African Super Cup and 3 Arab Club Championships.
Wydad’s current crisis exceeds the team’s performances on the field. The club’s president Said Naciri is currently detained and facing serious charges including international drug trafficking, forgery, money laundering, and abuse of power, according to a report by SNRT News.
