Rabat – The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of First Instance in Zagora has initiated legal proceedings against a farmer accused of mutilating an animal’s limbs in the Zagora region.
According to converging news reports, the accused, whose identity remains undisclosed, is currently on bail amounting to MAD 2000 ($197), pending trial for the alleged offense.
Reports indicate that the Royal Gendarmerie presented the suspect before the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The incident, which involved the mutilation of a donkey’s limbs, took place in the commune of Rwahe, situated on the outskirts of Zagora city last Tuesday.
The farmer allegedly used a sharp tool to sever the hind legs of the donkey, in what residents describe as a “heinous” act of revenge.
According to sources, the farmer claimed to have found the donkey on his farm and blamed it for recent crop losses. But the brutal manner in which he allegedly took his revenge has sparked outrage among the locals.
Residents of the area have revealed that the farmer has a history of cruel treatment of animals. Previous instances of the man’s mistreatment of animals include torture and starvation, some locals reported.
After several news outlets across Morocco ran the story, many commenters took to social media to strongly condemn the man’s brutality.
In particular, the outraged commenters took issue with the fact that the farmer’s cruel treatment of the donkey coincided with the final day of the holy month of Ramadan, a time when Muslims are encouraged to cultivate kindness and compassion.
