Rabat – Morocco launched today in Rabat the first Morocco Exhibition for Electronic Games Industry to promote the electronic games industry and show its technical, financial, and educational components.

The exhibition ceremony was attended by King Mohammed VI’s advisor Andre Azoulay, Minister of Culture Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, as well as Minister in charge of Digital Transition Ghita Mezzour and Minister of Urban Planning Fatima Ezzahra Mansouri.

In a speech during the opening ceremony, Bensaid emphasized the importance of the electronic games industry, noting that its significance extends beyond the economic aspect

“Our heritage, history, and narratives nourish cultural and creative industries,” he said, adding that despite the significant contribution of young Moroccan talents to the stimulation of electronic games and innovation, Morocco still perceived worldwide primarily as a consumer.

Morocco’s goal is to move from a passive consumption to that of production, Bensaid noted, highlighting King Mohammed VI’s vision of making “culture , heritage, and human capital the basis of our development project.”

The electronic games sector has the potential to become a locomotive and a model for other sectors, the minister argued. He once again invoked what he described as King Mohammed’s visionary strategy to transform Morocco’s gaming industry, stressing that the strategy focused on a wide range of axes, notably including talent attraction, training, and supporting local and international enterprises.

The event also featured high-level attendees such as Japanese technical developer Takaya Imamura. An honorary guest at the exhibition, the Japanese expert expressed his confidence in the promising future of the electronic games industry in Morocco and across the African continent.

A former developer at Nintendo, Imamura noted that the development of electronic games in  Africa depends on African developers unleashing their imaginations to innovate. He also emphasized the importance of the creativity of youth to facilitate the emergence of many good ideas in the sector.

This comes as Morocco continues to invest considerable efforts in boosting its gaming industry.

German statistics website Statista reported in April that the North African country’s video game business is projected to increase at an annual rate of 9.39% between 2024 and 2027, resulting in sales of $227.3 million in 2024 and $297.5 million by 2027.

With such upbeat projects, several recent surveys have captured young Moroccans’ growing passion for video games.

A 2022 survey by Moroccan market research firm Sunergia found that Moroccan men spend an average of MAD 268 or $26 approximately on gaming microtransactions. By contrast, women only spend MAD 24 or approximately $2.
