Rabat – A 17-year-old girl died early Friday morning in northern France during celebrations following Morocco’s defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal.

France 3 reported that the girl climbed onto the back of a truck tractor along with several other people.

After falling, she was struck by the moving vehicle, the report said, adding that the girl died at the scene in the tragic incident.

An investigation is ongoing, and the 45-year-old driver has been taken into police custody.

The incident took place at 12:30 a.m., and several witnesses were also taken to the hospital for medical care after they were deeply shocked.

France 3 reported, based on footage it reviewed, that the girl fell when the truck began moving.

Laurent Dumaine, the public prosecutor, said the truck driver and some of his guests decided to celebrate the French victory after a private gathering.

“They got into the truck’s cab and drove toward the center of Aulnoye-Aymeries, where the large crowd slowed the vehicle’s progress.”

France erupted in celebration on Thursday night after defeating the Atlas Lions, who exited the World Cup after a 2-0 loss.

France’s coach Didier Deschamps paid tribute to Morocco after the game, stressing that the Atlas Lions have a bright future.

“I was a little surprised by Morocco’s starting lineup,” Deschamps said. “But I tried to understand what they wanted to do, drawing our defenders out without a traditional striker and using pace on the wings.”

He acknowledged that his team’s control of possession limited  Morocco’s attacking threat and expressed strong respect for the Moroccan team.
