Rabat – Hala Rharrit, the Morocco-born spokesperson for the U.S. State Department recently tendered her resignation, citing her opposition to Washington’s policy on the ongoing war in Gaza.
This marks at least the third instance of conscious quitting by a high-ranking State Department official in response to America’s perceived indifference to the plight of Palestinians.
After serving for nearly two decades in the State Department and also holding the position of deputy director at the Dubai Regional Media Hub, Rharrit announced her resignation late last month via her LinkedIn profile, stating her profound disagreement with the United States’ Gaza policy as the reason for her departure.
In an interview with Al Arabiya News, Rharrit emphasized the importance of diplomacy over further arms transfers, expressing concerns about the perpetuation of violence in the region.
Responding to questions about Rharrit’s resignation during a press briefing, Vedant Patel, the deputy State Department spokesman, highlighted the department’s commitment to fostering diverse perspectives among its workforce.
Dissenting opinions contribute to more robust policymaking, he explained, appearing to shift the focus from the troubling fact that America’s position on the Gaza war has been globally, overwhelmingly pro-Israeli and relatively indifferent to the daily massacre of Palestinians.
Indeed, Rharrit’s resignation adds to a series of departures from various government departments over disagreements with the Biden administration’s stance on Gaza.

Annelle Sheline and Josh Paul from the State Department, as well as Tariq Habash from the U.S. Education Department, have also stepped down in recent months.
Criticism of the United States’ support for Israel amid the Gaza war has escalated both internationally and domestically.
Last November, over 1,000 officials from the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) signed an open letter calling for an immediate ceasefire.
At the same time, internal dissent against the administration’s policy has been expressed through the State Department’s “dissent channel.” This suggests that perhaps a much larger number of US diplomats are profoundly repulsed by what they see as America’s complicit silence and tacit approval of Israel’s murderous campaign in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
As Israeli Occupation Forces continue their deadly war on Gaza, the death toll has spectacularly peaked to reach at least 34,596 as of today, including a distressingly high number of children, women, and elderly.
