Rabat – Trend Micro Incorporated, an international cybersecurity company, revealed in a new report that they detected and blocked 52 million threats targeting Morocco in 2023.

Titled “Calibrating Expansion,” the annual report explains that Trend Micro thwarted more than 40 million email threats and over 1.6 million malicious URL attacks, and stopped more than 3.7 million malware incidents.

The company neutralized more than 161 billion threats worldwide in 2023, marking a 10% annual increase.

In addition, Trend Micro detected a staggering 349% increase in email malware globally, while malicious and phishing URL detections dropped by 27%. The report also identified cloud app access as the greatest risk, with nearly 83 billion access attempts recorded.

Commenting on the findings of the report, Assad Arabi, Managing Director for Africa & Venture Markets at Trend Micro said in cybersecurity, a “breach isn’t always a catastrophe in itself; rather, it’s often our response that can escalate it into a major challenge or crisis.”

Shedding light on Trend Micro’s efforts to combat the global proliferation of cyber threats, Arabi said that his company “helps organizations stay ahead of cyber threats by adopting the latest solutions, including the seamless integration of AI.”

He added: “Our proactive approach allows us to anticipate and address potential breaches before they escalate. Our annual report stands as a testament to this commitment, showcasing how we navigate and mitigate breaches, turning potential crises into opportunities for resilience and growth.”

The findings of this report are in line with previous studies suggesting that Morocco is highly exposed to the cyber threat. In December 2023, a report by Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky ranked Morocco as the 15th country with the highest number of online infections in the first 10 months of 2023.
