Rabat – As it looks to enhance its military capabilities, Morocco is taking bold steps to transition from reliance on imports to becoming a self-sufficient manufacturer in the defense sector.
The North African country has in recent years invested heavily to strengthen its upgrading military prowess with an ambition to elevate its standing in global defense capabilities.
On Saturday, King Mohammed VI chaired a Ministerial Council on the approval of draft organic laws and decrees dedicated to the military sector.
One of the key measures discussed during the meeting is the establishment of two defense industrial acceleration zones positioned to accommodate the burgeoning defense industries.
These zones are set to facilitate the production of defense and security equipment, as well as weapons and munitions.
Morocco’s 2024 finance bill has allocated $12 billion to the defense industry, representing an increase of over $484.7 million compared to last year.
This demonstrates a consistent trend of investment in the defense sector and a commitment to enhancing military capabilities and ensuring national security.
Article 37 of the 2024 finance bill notes that the allocated funds will focus on acquiring and repairing materials for the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) and supporting the development of the defense industry.
According to the latest Global Firepower Index, Morocco is currently in 61st position in military strength ranking worldwide.
Notably, the North African country ranked among the top 20 countries in terms of artillery strength, according to a recent report from the financial website Insider Monkey.
The country has been investing heavily in modernizing its military sector and has become one of the world’s top arms importers.
Morocco has acquired cutting-edge military technology in recent years, including drones, fighter jets, and defense systems. Notable acquisitions include the “HIMARS” missile system and speedboats from the US.
Earlier this year, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced Morocco’s acquisition of 24 advanced F-16 Viper fighter jets.
The F-16 Viper is renowned for its technological advancements, including the AN/APG-83 AESA radar system, high-resolution central display in the cockpit and Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS).
And just last month, the US State Department approved a $260 million sale of 612 Javelin missiles and 200 launching units to Morocco.
The missiles, known for their precision and effectiveness, will be accompanied by related equipment and support provisions, including training programs for Moroccan military personnel.
