Marrakech – The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has announced the appointment of an integrity expert to investigate the incidents that took place during the Olympic Football Tournament match between Morocco and Argentina at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne, France.
The decision follows potential breaches of FIFA regulations due to crowd disturbances that marred the game.
The outcome of this investigation will be communicated by FIFA in due course.
The match, which kicked off at 2 p.m. (GMT+1), saw Morocco take a commanding 2-0 lead through goals from Soufiane Rahimi. Argentina managed to pull one back in the 68th minute through Giuliano Simeone, setting the stage for a tense finale.
In the 106th minute, deep into stoppage time, Argentina was thought to have secured a dramatic equalizer when Cristian Medina headed home after a series of deflections.
However, the celebrations were cut short as some Morocco fans invaded the pitch, leading to the match being suspended.
Amid the chaos, with players ducking to avoid flare-like objects thrown from the stands, the teams left the field, and the broadcast feed was cut.
Fans were asked to leave the stadium, and it initially appeared that the match had ended in a 2-2 draw.
Nearly two hours later, in a stunning twist, it was revealed that Argentina’s equalizing goal had been disallowed for offside following a VAR review.
The players returned to an empty stadium to complete the remaining minutes, with Morocco holding on for a 2-1 victory.
Argentina coach Javier Mascherano was furious with the handling of the situation, calling it a “scandal” and a “circus.”
He claimed that his team was never informed about the VAR review and that the match should have been suspended much earlier due to the repeated pitch invasions.
Adding to Argentina’s woes, midfielder Thiago Almada’s possessions were allegedly stolen from the team’s training base before the match.
The Argentine Football Association has issued a formal protest to FIFA, demanding an explanation for the events that unfolded and guarantees for the safety of their players in future matches.
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi took to Twitter to condemn the behavior of the pitch-invading fans, stating that such actions have no place in football and tarnish the image of Morocco’s loyal supporters.
As the tournament progresses, both teams will look to put this controversial match behind them. Morocco will face Ukraine in their next match at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, while Argentina is set to take on Iraq at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon.
The Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024 has gotten off to a tumultuous start, and the football world eagerly awaits the outcome of FIFA’s investigation into the incidents that marred this opening match.
