Rabat – Moroccan football player Illias Akhomach has rejected a $150,000-a-week offer from the Riyadh club Al Hilal, and decided instead to stay with Villareal.
The incredible package for the 21-year old Moroccan winger would have increased his current salary by more than seven times. But Akhomach held out to stay in Villareal where he feels valued and has the opportunity to advance his career in one of the biggest clubs in Europe, according to outlet AS.
On the other hand, Villareal would have pocketed $27 million in transfer cash.
For a long time, there has been a maxim in football that it seems impossible to snub the mega million-dollar payouts that Saudi clubs are splurging on top players.
Until recently, these leagues were more fitting for footballers in the final stretch of their careers, than for promising young players.
However, since Gabri Veiga, 22, left Celta, it was clear that even age is no longer considered when switching to non-European leagues.
For time now, we have seen great players leaving elite clubs for the promise of fat checks.
