Rabat – A video from the Marrakech International Film Festival has sparked widespread controversy and anger, capturing the moment when several audience members exited a theater during a film screening. The walkout reportedly followed the portrayal of a homosexual relationship in one of the scenes.

The scene in question depicts two men lying naked next to each other, embracing in a moment of intimacy. They are shown cuddling in a vulnerable and tender display of affection, which became the focal point of the audience’s reaction.

Widely shared on social media, the footage shows attendees leaving their seats and exiting the venue, with some visibly upset and others angrily voicing their disapproval.

While a few left quietly, the walkout has ignited online debates, drawing a range of reactions and opinions, mostly marked by an angry tone.

Many Moroccans took to social media to express their disapproval of the scene.

Social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram were inundated with critical reactions, as many users condemned the inclusion of the scene and argued it clashed with local cultural and religious values.

One user commented, “It’s reassuring to see that there are still people who stand by their principles,” referencing the attendees who chose to leave.

Another remarked, “An indecent scene like that? They should have torn the whole theater apart for this.”

No official statement has been issued by the festival organizers regarding the walk-out. However, social media users have debated the appropriateness of the audience’s reaction.

In Morocco, homosexuality is criminalized under Article 489 of the penal code, which imposes prison sentences ranging from six months to three years and fines between MAD 120 ($12) and MAD 1,000 ($100) for same-sex relationships or acts.
