Rabat – Marrakech, one of Morocco’s most iconic cities and a global tourism hub, set a historic record in 2024 by attracting nearly 4 million visitors.
Hamid Bentahar, President of the Marrakech-Safi Regional Tourism Council (CRT), announced this milestone achievement on Friday during a meeting of the CRT Executive Committee in Marrakech.
Bentahar revealed that the region recorded over 12 million overnight stays, with an average occupancy rate surpassing 72%.These “exceptional” results are the outcome of collaborative efforts between public and private stakeholders, positioning Marrakech as a top global tourism destination, he noted. Bentahar also emphasized that the city’s appeal continues to draw travelers from around the world.
Marrakech’s tourism success is the result of years of concerted work between government entities, local businesses, and industry professionals.
Achraf Fayda, Director General of the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT), underscored the importance of a regional approach that leverages the unique potential of Marrakech-Safi’s diverse provinces.
Fayda also highlighted ongoing efforts to diversify the city’s tourist markets, focusing on emerging regions such as Latin America, Asia, and Africa. He reaffirmed ONMT’s commitment to this strategy, recognizing it as crucial for sustaining the region’s growth.
Sustainability at the Forefront
The meeting also addressed the need for sustainable tourism practices. Bentahar stressed the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental and cultural preservation.
“These results are a source of collective pride, but they also inspire us to strengthen our efforts in positioning Marrakech as not just a must-visit destination, but a sustainable one,” Bentahar said.
Tourism professionals are already looking toward 2025, with plans to enhance air connections with long-haul markets and intensify promotional campaigns to extend the city’s global reach.
The CRT and ONMT have in recent days reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration, with both looking to build on this year’s success and set new benchmarks for the future.
The latest, milestone figures further cement Marrakech’s status as a key player in Morocco‘s tourism sector, showcasing the city’s ability to attract significant numbers of visitors while navigating the competitive global market.
