Rabat– A staff member at the El Arjat 2 Local prison has taken his own life, according to a statement by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR). The incident took place on Friday, when the officer, identified as “F.A.,” died by suicide using his service weapon.
DGAPR has reported that the incident occurred in Moulay Youssef Provincial Hospital in Rabat, where the officer was assigned to guard a hospitalized inmate. After ensuring the inmate’s security, the officer reportedly secluded himself in the hospital’s restroom, committing suicide around 8 p.m.
The prison management immediately informed the public prosecutor, to ensure that the necessary investigations would be conducted following legal procedures Additionally.
It has notably launched an internal inquiry to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.
According to the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), an estimated 703,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year.
The studies show that the global suicide rate is over twice as high among men than women, with over half (58%) of all deaths by suicide occurring before the age of 50 years.
Reports from the World Health Organization emphasize that suicide does not take place only in high-income countries but across the world.
The suicide mortality rate (per 100,000 population) in Morocco was reported at 7.2 % in 2019, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources.
Although reports show that Morocco does not suffer as many suicides as other countries, there continues to be a stigma around mental health in the country. Experts have long warned that this persisting stigma may be one of the main factors leading many to harm themselves or others instead of seeking help.
