Rabat – King Mohammed VI on Monday performed the traditional Eid Al Fitr prayer at the “Ahl Fès” mosque in the Mechouar area of Rabat.
The special prayer marks Eid, which is celebrated on Monday across Morocco, as today marks the 1st of Shawwal 1446 in the Islamic calendar, celebrating the end of Ramadan.
The monarch performed the Eid Al Fitr prayer accompanied by his son, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, his brother, Prince Moulay Rachid, and other royal family members.
In addition to members of the royal family, officials from the Moroccan government were also in attendance, including Minister of Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq and Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch.
Prior to the prayers, King Mohammed VI extended his heartfelt wishes to Arab leaders observing the Eid across the world.
He also observed Eid by issuing a royal pardon to 1,533 people sentenced by different courts in Morocco.
Royal pardons are part of a long-standing tradition in Morocco that is observed during significant religious and national holidays.
Eid Al Fitr is another major Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan’s month-long fasting.
Following Eid prayers, Moroccans gather for a celebratory breakfast featuring pastries and Moroccan traditional food like msmen, beghrir, among other sweets, defining Morocco’s rich culture.
The day wil continue with the exchange of visits among families, and the sharing of lunch or dinner, as part of the country’s customs during Eid.
