Rabat– The Atlas Lions have clinched a place in the semifinals of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations with an impressive 3-1 victory over South Africa in a thrilling quarter-final clash held Wednesday evening at the El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia.

Morocco opened the scoring in the first half at the 13th minute thanks to rising star Ismail Al Aoud, who netted a well-executed goal and delivered a standout performance throughout the game.

The first 45 minutes ended with Morocco leading 1-0, reflecting their control and intensity from the start.

South Africa came back strong after the break, equalizing early in the second half with a goal from Neo Bohloko, momentarily putting pressure on the Moroccan side. However, the Atlas Lions responded with confidence and determination.

Ziyad Baha Abelhadj quickly turned the momentum back in Morocco’s favor, scoring two consecutive goals in the 61st and 62nd minutes. His stunning brace revived the Atlas Lions’ lead and reignited their campaign for the title.

Despite South Africa holding a slight edge in ball possession with 51% compared to Morocco’s 49%, it was the Moroccan team that displayed greater efficiency and clinical finishing in front of goal.

The referee added four minutes of stoppage time at the end of the second half, but the scoreline remained unchanged, sealing Morocco’s 3-1 victory and their progression to the semifinals.

With this victory, Morocco continues its impressive tournament run. They had previously topped Group A with seven points following wins over Uganda and Tanzania, and a draw with Zambia. The team has now scored 11 goals in the competition, affirming their status as one of the strongest attacks of the tournament.

Meanwhile, South Africa, who finished second in Group B, exit the tournament despite a spirited performance.

Morocco now advances to the semifinals with high hopes and growing confidence, as fans across the country rally behind the young talents representing the nation.
