Rabat – The Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF) has announced the start of major works in the Casablanca region as part of the Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail (LGV) project.
The project will add extra tracks, six in total: two for high-speed trains, two for local commuter trains, and two for other trains, said ONCF in a press release. At least 40 railway structures in Casablanca will be renovated to accommodate these changes.
In addition, the works include the installation of a new-generation signaling system, construction of new high-speed and local stations, 600 km of electrified tracks, and nine maintenance centers for trains and equipment.
The construction will take place from September 2025 to the end of 2027 in multiple phases. Each phase will have specific transport plans, including nighttime and daytime work.
Some stations, like Mers Sultan in Casablanca, will temporarily close for renovations. The first phase starts on September 15 and will focus on adjusting train schedules while maintaining regular service.
ONCF says it has put in place strict planning to minimize disruption and will deploy experienced staff and specialized equipment. A special support system for travelers will begin on September 8.
Once completed, the Kenitra-Marrakech LGV line will extend the Tangier-Kenitra high-speed route by 430 km. Travelers will be able to go from Tangier to Marrakech in just 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The upgrades aim to create a modern railway infrastructure that meets travel needs, particularly between Mohammedia and Nouaceur.
The project will also connect major hubs such as airports and stadiums and improve access to cities across the country. This comes as Morocco prepares to host international sporting events, including the 2030 World Cup.
The upgraded high-speed rail will help fans travel quickly and comfortably between key cities and match venues.
