Mohammedia – Pelagos Data Centres announced plans for a massive 250-megawatt (MW) data center in Gibraltar, in what is being described as one of the territory’s largest-ever infrastructure projects.
The development, valued at around £1.8 billion, positions Gibraltar as a new strategic hub for digital infrastructure in Europe.
Unveiled today, alongside Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, the project will be constructed in five phases on a 20,000-square-metre site near the Port of Gibraltar. The first stage is expected to go live in late 2027, with further phases following every 18 months.
Once complete, it will meet Tier III standards, ensuring high availability and reliability, and serve both public and private sector clients.
The centre is designed to support AI and cloud computing workloads, reflecting the surge in demand for scalable and energy-efficient digital infrastructure.
Sustainability is a central feature as the facility will operate independently of Gibraltar’s grid, powered by a mix of renewables and liquefied natural gas, with a target of net-zero emissions by 2030.
The project promises significant local benefits, including 500 construction jobs and 100 permanent roles. It will also stimulate demand for local services, support the growth of Gibraltar’s digital sector, and enhance the territory’s appeal as a destination for global investment.
Pelagos Chairman Konstantin Sokolov described the project as a “new chapter” for Gibraltar, adding that AI will define the next era of economic and social transformation. Chief Minister Picardo welcomed the investment, calling it a “huge economic impact” for the community.
With construction due to begin in 2026, the data centre marks a bold step in Gibraltar’s ambition to become a player in Europe’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
