Al Ahly SC, the top football club in Egypt and Africa, is in the process of taking goalkeeper training to a new level. Recent training pictures showed Al Ahly goalkeepers using stroboscopic glasses – eyewear that alternates between clear and blurred training – while training.
The idea is that it forces the brain to process the visual stimuli faster by inhibiting vision intermittently, improving the two skills all keepers must have when performing on the pitch: reaction time and decision making.
Stroboscopic goggles, or strobe glasses, work by creating short interruptions in the athlete’s visual field. When they have the goggles on, a strobe creates a few seconds of darkness during which the goalkeepers need to keep track of the ball and anticipate the movements and responses.
Training this way challenges the athlete’s brain to focus and fill in missing visual information, thereby enhancing anticipation, focus, and coordination. This has been used across several sports, from basketball to volleyball, and now Al Ahly has incorporated strobe glasses into their new styles of training.
There is research that supports stroboscopic visual training (SVT). It proved that for 10–20 minutes, 2–3 times a week, for 6–10 weeks, SVT can help improve reaction speed, accuracy and visual-cognitive skills. Results of SVT outcome will naturally differ among athletes and sports, but it’s becoming an established training method used to improve performance under pressure.
For goalkeepers, the advantages are tangible: anticipating the ball and reacting instantly can be the difference between a regular save and a match-winning save. By training in these conditions, goalkeepers develop a stronger connection between their eye-brain-body system and are able to react with better efficiency, especially under high-pressure situations.
How Al Ahly uses stroboscopic training
At Al Ahly, keepers train with the glasses for about 15 minutes each day during their sessions over 2 to 3 months. It’s all part of developing their reflexes, diving technique, and concentration and coordination within the drills. Combining this kind of training with physical exercise should give them an incredible edge on the pitch.
This is part of a bigger trend called neurotraining that aims to optimize both the mental and physical elements of sport performance. Teams from Europe and the NBA, including players like Stephen Curry and Kawhi Leonard are using similar approaches to improve reaction speed, decision making and visual awareness.
By using stroboscopic glasses, Al Ahly is giving their goalkeepers a tool to be sharper, quicker and more aware on the pitch. This advanced science-informed way of training intends for them to react faster and anticipate better in intense and important games.
