Rabat – Morocco’s Justice and Development Party (PJD) has called for the creation of a national commission of inquiry, under royal instructions, to investigate the unprecedented mass migration toward occupied Ceuta that unfolded in northern Morocco.
The call came in a statement issued after an extraordinary meeting of the party’s General Secretariat on Saturday. Originally scheduled to discuss electoral matters, the meeting was instead dedicated to the recent events in the cities of M’diq and Fnideq following the large-scale attempts by thousands of people to reach Ceuta.
The party expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the incident and prayed for the victims, describing the events as painful and deeply concerning.
While cautioning against premature conclusions over the causes of the migration, the PJD reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s monarchy, emphasizing the constitutional and strategic role of King Mohammed VI in safeguarding the country’s stability, unity, and institutions.
The party called for a transparent national investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident, urging that the findings be made public. It said the inquiry should identify responsibilities and help develop solutions to the democratic, developmental, social, and economic challenges that drive many young Moroccans to risk irregular migration.
The PJD also criticized the government’s silence in the aftermath of the events, accusing it of failing to communicate with the public. It further criticized public media for not adequately covering the developments, arguing that many Moroccans were forced to rely on foreign media outlets for information.
According to the statement, the mass migration reflects deeper structural problems despite Morocco’s infrastructure and development achievements. The party argued that unemployment, social inequalities, and declining trust in public institutions continue to push young people toward dangerous migration attempts.
The party also warned that growing public frustration and recurring protests should serve as a signal for policymakers to review current governance approaches. It stressed the need for reforms that strengthen democratic institutions, improve public services, create employment opportunities, and restore citizens’ confidence in the state.
The PJD concluded by calling for a national response that addresses the root causes of the crisis while preserving Morocco’s stability and protecting the country’s achievements.
