Rabat — A source close to Hamas’ negotiating team told AFP that the resistance group has reportedly relinquished control over Gaza.
“For Hamas, governance of the Gaza Strip is a settled matter. Hamas will not participate at all in the transitional phase, which means it has relinquished control over Gaza, but it remains a fundamental part of the Palestinian fabric,” the source said, on condition of anonymity.
The source confirmed the news today ahead of a summit that will discuss the Palestinian cause in Egypt. The suspect is expected to bring together international leaders, including US President Donald Trump.
The US President announced a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel on Thursday as part of the first phase of the Trump “peace plan”.
The ceasefire came into effect on Friday, with the Israeli government saying that it has begun to withdraw from parts of the trip.
Videos also show thousands of Palestinians returning home.
As part of the first phase, the two parties agreed on the release of hostages and Palestinian prisoners.
According to the deal, Israeli hostages will be released in exchange for around 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 detainees from Gaza.
According to the source close to Hamas, the resistance leadership accepts a “long-term truce and that its weapons will not be used at all during this period, except in the event of an Israeli attack on Gaza.”
However, an official from Hamas told AFP on Saturday that the “proposal handover of weapons is out of the question and non-negotiable.”
The desperately-needed ceasefire agreement comes after over two years of Israel’s devastating genocidal war on Gaza that has wounded nearly 170,000 people and killed over 67,000.
Members of the international community have been pushing for an end to the genocide on Palestinians, calling for the next steps to focus on peace.
Pope Leo XIV said before tomorrow’s summit that the agreement to begin the peace process “has given a spark of hope in the Holy Land.”
“I encourage the parties involved to courageously continue on the path towards a just and lasting peace that respects the legitimate aspirations of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.”
However, Palestinians and supporters of the cause remain skeptical of the future for Gaza, as Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) struck the enclave just hours after the ceasefire deal terms were agreed upon on Friday, October 10
