Rabat – With exactly one year to go before the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, the Dakar 2026 Organizing Committee has unveiled Ayo, the official mascot for the upcoming games, which will be the first ever to be hosted on African soil.
Ayo, a young lion whose name means “joy” in Yoruba, symbolizes the energy, optimism, and unity of Africa’s new generation.
Wearing a traditional Fulani Tingandé hat, Ayo embodies both wisdom and connection to Senegal’s rural heritage, merging modern vibrancy with ancestral pride.
The mascot was revealed during a grand ceremony at Dakar’s Grand Théâtre National, attended by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, IOC President Kirsty Coventry, Humphrey Kayange, Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for Dakar 2026, and Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye, President of both the Senegalese Olympic Committee and the local Organizing Committee.
“These Games represent so much for Africa; they will inspire the next generation and open doors of opportunity across our continent and beyond,” said IOC President Kirsty Coventry during the event.
“Mascot Ayo carries a powerful message of joy and breaks many boundaries, a true symbol of how young and dynamic our continent is,” she added.
The mascot was the result of a nationwide design competition launched by the Organizing Committee in collaboration with Senegal’s Ministry of National Education.
More than 500 students from all 16 academic regions submitted entries, showing the Games’ strong educational and civic engagement component.
The “One Year to Go” celebrations continue throughout the week, including the unveiling of the official countdown clock later today by Worldwide Olympic Partner OMEGA in downtown Dakar.
Early November will also mark the return of “Dakar en Jeux”, a cultural and sports festival bringing together communities across Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly through music, visual arts, and Olympic-themed activities.
Set to take place from October 31 to November 13, 2026, the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will bring together 2,700 young athletes from around the world, competing across three host cities: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly.
