Rabat – FIFA has recently announced a new annual award, the “FIFA Peace Prize – Football Unites the World.” It will recognize individuals who use football to unite people and inspire hope for next generations.
The first award will be presented at the 2026 World Cup Final Draw on December 5, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
FIFA says the Peace Award will recognise “extraordinary actions for peace and unity,” undertaken by people who use the game as a bridge between cultures and communities. Given its global audience, it is the perfect means of conveying messages of harmony and inclusion.
A message of unity through football
According to its announcement, FIFA will be awarding a Peace Award each year to individuals who promote peace and unity via football. FIFA linked this effort with the organization’s ongoing campaign — “Football Unites the World” — a slogan that has been present in recent competitions.
FIFA made this announcement ahead of the expanded 2026 World Cup, which will be played in 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This Peace Award will become an annual part of the FIFA calendar at a major tournament.
Infantino, FIFA President, declined to reveal who would present the first Peace Award winner, stating, “You will see.”
FIFA has not shared any particular details related to the nominations, selections or criteria for the Peace Award. There will be significant attention at the 2026 World Cup draw, where the Peace Award will be introduced, and it’s the next step to prepare for the first 48-team World Cup.
