Rabat – Morocco captain Romain Saiss admitted that the national team’s 1-0 victory over Mozambique was far from easy, stressing that the most important thing was securing the win and continuing to build confidence ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.
“It was a complicated match because the opponent has a good team that we analyzed beforehand through video,” Saiss said after the game. “We knew they would try to play and build from the back even under pressure, so we wanted to start strong and press high to score early and open the match more.”
Saiss explained that Morocco succeeded in applying pressure at the beginning and maintained a solid performance throughout. He noted one weakness, however: “The only negative point, between brackets, is that we should have finished the match earlier because we created many clear chances.”
The veteran defender stressed the importance of video analysis in identifying strengths and weaknesses, saying small details often decide major tournaments.
He also pointed out the challenge of facing teams that rely on deep defensive blocks. “Playing against sides with low defense is not easy. Even the biggest clubs in Europe struggle with that, and their players train together every day. For us it is harder because we only gather for ten days, sometimes with new players. But the key is finding solutions and winning.”
Saïss stressed that results matter more than scorelines at this stage. “Of course, we want to win by three or four goals, but that is not always possible. The important thing is to get results, because that is what counts in the end. If I told you we would win every AFCON match 1-0 and reach the final, you would all accept it. Winning is very important for building confidence.”
He concluded by stressing that the team is moving in the right direction and that friendlies like this help raise the rhythm and prepare properly for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, which Morocco will host from December 21 to January 18.
