Rabat – Interpol’s new President, Lucas Philippe, announced on Thursday his determination to deepen security cooperation with Morocco.
Philippe’s remarks followed his election as the president of the security agency today at the Interpol’s General Assembly in Marrakech.
“Collaboration with Morocco is not something to invent; it is something to deepen even more,” Philippe told the press.
The new Interpol president said he is determined to give “greater momentum” to cooperation with Morocco, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to a pragmatic and achievable security plan.
Philippe succeeds Ahmed Naser al Raisi of the UAE, who has served as Interpol president since November 2021.
He was sworn in with 84 votes, representing 51.2% of the ballots cast during the vote held during the General Assembly.
Lucas’ duties will include chairing meetings of the Executive Committees, which oversee the implementation of decisions taken by the General Assembly.
Interpol also elected other new members to serve on its executive committee, including the Vice-President for Asia, and Delegates for Africa, Asia, and Europe.
The executive committee is responsible for providing strategic guidance and overseeing the implementation of the General Assembly decisions, as well as ensuring alignment with the organization’s priorities.
The new members elected today include the Vice President for Asia, Wang Yong of China; Delegate for Africa, Issam Fetoui of Tunisia; Delegate for Africa, Mohamed Ibrahim Amin of Kenya; Delegate for Asia, Kazumi Ogasawara of Japan; and Delegate for Europe, Stefano Carvelli of Italy.
Interpol’s Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza emphasized at the General Assembly the importance of strengthening the organization’s governance structures in the face of increasingly complex transnational crime.
“I look forward to working with the new – and continuing – members of the Executive Committee so that together we can listen and respond to the needs of our member countries as they confront current and emerging threats,” Urquiza said.
The Committee includes 13 members, including the president, three vice-presidents, and nine delegates.
