Rabat – Police in Casablanca arrested on Saturday, 14 individuals for their alleged involvement in violent incidents tied to sports hooliganism.
Police, the individuals were allegedly involved in incidents that caused injuries and damage to public property.
Police received information that the group of individuals belonged to two supporter groups of a local football club.
According to Moroccan news outlet Le360, some of them were involved in knife-related clashes in public. The clashes resulted in injuries to a citizen.
Reports said the individuals also violently resisted police intervention, throwing stones that caused damage to public property, including security vehicles.
An investigation led the police to arrest 14 individuals who were allegedly directly involved in the criminal acts.
Police seized four knives in the possession of the suspects as well as a tear gas canister.
The suspects are in custody to determine all circumstances and details of the case. Police are also continuing their patrol operation to identify and arrest potential suspects involved in the acts.
Morocco has been pledging commitment to curb hooliganism and reinforce security at sporting events. In October, police arrested 12 people following a violent confrontation between rival football fan groups in the city.
