Rabat – GenZ 212, a Moroccan youth-led civic movement, issued a statement today calling for nationwide peaceful protests, urging citizens to break what it describes as “a culture of silence and fear and to demand accountability over ongoing marginalization and institutional neglect”.
The call comes in the wake of a deadly tragedy in Safi, where severe flooding claimed lives and caused significant damage. According to official data, 37 died, while all the injured were sent for immediate treatment.
At the same time, other regions across Morocco have faced extreme weather conditions, including intense cold spells and widespread flooding which left many communities vulnerable and strained local infrastructure.
In its statement, the movement said that silence has failed to protect communities and has instead allowed repeated tragedies to occur without accountability.
GenZ 212 argued that current conditions are not inevitable, but rather the result of sustained neglect, the suppression of truth, and intimidation of dissenting voices.
According to the group, rights are not automatically granted, but are secured through collective, peaceful, and responsible civic action. The movement placed full political and moral responsibility on the government, citing what it described as “failures in governance and protection.”
It argued that recent developments should not be treated as isolated incidents, but as consequences of policies that leave citizens exposed to danger while avoiding accountability. Referencing Safi alongside other cities and regions, GenZ 212 stressed that marginalization is not limited to one location.
Addressing residents across Morocco, including Fez, Tafilalet, Tangier, Tetouan, Casablanca, and beyond, the movement said shared grievances require a unified national response. “Our cause is one, our pain is one, and our voice must be one,” the statement read.
GenZ 212 called on Moroccan youth and civil society to take part in peaceful protest actions scheduled for December 20 and 21. The movement rejected intimidation and urged participants to speak openly, calling for transparency and accountability regarding the loss of innocent lives.
The statement concluded by saying that peaceful protest is a legitimate civic tool to dismantle fear, confront injustice, and pursue dignity through non-violent means.
