Rabat – DW has published a detailed report exposing how AI-generated videos are targeting Morocco amid floods sweeping the country due to adverse weather.
On Saturday, the news outlet shed light on the fake news and misleading information about floods in Morocco that have been circulating on social media and outlets in recent days.
“The most damaging and influential were videos showing catastrophic situations that never actually occurred,” the report said.
DW notably highlighted the case of heavy rains that hit Morocco’s Safi in December 2025, and the current floods that have also struck several regions in recent weeks, forcing 188,000 people to evacuate.
It documented how impactful images of floods were mixed with fake or AI-generated content on social media, including one TikTok post that generated three million views.
Notably, the post showed scenes of raging torrents that swept through streets, flooding entire neighborhoods.
The same content claims Moroccan authorities failed to provide timely information about the floods and released water from dams.
Yet DW’s team found the video was fabricated and AI-generated, highlighting evidence such as the disappearance of some scenes, unrealistic visuals, and flaws throughout the content.
One of the flaws detected by the DW team also includes another TikTok video with over 210,000 views, showing a reporter allegedly covering the floods.
“However, careful analysis reveals that the footage is not real and was generated with AI,” DW stressed.
During and following the AFCON that Morocco hosted recently, many exploited the tournament – including the chaotic final — to spread a tsunami of fake news.
Trolling pages exploited the tournament to disseminate fake news and disinformation, with one of these popular fake stories originating from rumors alleging the death of a stadium staff member.
In the middle of the frustration, fake news quickly found space to spread fuel to the fire, leading in some cases to hateful commentary online.
