Rabat – Moroccans will officially celebrate Eid Al Fitr 2026 on Friday, March 20, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs announced on Thursday evening.
The ministry said the moon-sighting committee sighted the crescent this evening. This means the beginning of Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic calendar, is on Friday. Shawwal marks the end of Ramadan.
The ministry’s announcement came against astronomical calculations by Moroccan astronomer Ibrahim Akhyam, who said weeks ago that he expected Eid Al Fitr to fall on March 21.
This means Moroccans will have observed Ramadan for 29 days this year.
The holy month started in Morocco on February 19. By contrast, many countries including Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia, began observing Ramadan on February 18.
Many of these countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, have also announced that this year’s Eid Al Fitr will fall on March 20.
Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr by going to the mosque to perform morning prayer.
Following the prayers, families gather around the morning breakfast for the first time in a month of fasting.

Other dishes Moroccans serve during Eid Al Fitr include msmen or flat bread, and baghrir, also known as Moroccan pancakes.
Moroccans – particularly children – celebrate the festival by wearing new clothes and receiving gifts from their parents and close relatives.
