Agadir – US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause in plans to carry out any airstrikes against Iranian plants and its energy infrastructure for five days.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that “I have instructed the department of war to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period.”
This decision came after what he describes as “very good and productive conversations” with Iran. “I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East… constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week,” Trump stated.
The move comes directly after a series of warnings issued by Trump on March 22. The president threatened to attack Iran’s electricity plants unless they fully opened the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Iran has been threatening to completely close the vital maritime waterway if the US decided to go through with those strikes.
‘We are not the party that started this war’
According to state-affiliated media outlets, Iran’s foreign affairs ministry has interpreted Trump’s recent statements as part of a larger strategy to reduce energy prices, as well as a buy more time for their military plans.
“The US President’s statements are within the framework of efforts to reduce energy prices and gain time to implement his military plans,” the Iranian ministry said.
“There are initiatives by regional countries to de-escalate tensions, and our response to all of them is clear: We are not the party that started this war, and all these requests should be referred to Washington.”
Iran’s state media reported that Iran issued a strong warning, threatening to target critical infrastructure across the region if the US ultimately went ahead with its military threats.
This includes striking power plants that provide power to American bases, as well as those vital to the US economy.
Mehr news agency reported today that “the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at the US and Israeli targets.”
The agency added that these strikes targeted many American military bases and the Israeli military infrastructure, adding that places like Ashkelon, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Gush Dan were targeted with “Qiam liquid-fueled and Zolfaqar solid-fueled missiles as well as drones.”
