Rabat – Moroccan ambassador to Belgium Mohammed Ameur has commended ties with Brussels, stating relations with the country have reached an “unprecedented level of excellence.”

The ambassador made his remarks in an interview with 21News.

“Relations between the kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Belgium follow a particular configuration – rich, diverse, and deeply rooted in a shared history,” the ambassador said.

He added that ties between the two countries continue to remain strong through high-level ties of friendship.

“As in any dense relationship, some nuances may arise, but they in no way diminish its depth,” he said, emphasizing that the momentum between the two countries has been intensified from 2023 onward.

Ameur recalled Morocco’s position as a strong partner across different areas – including within security, migration, and economic sectors.

Among these developments is the High Joint Commission held in April 2024, which sought to reinvigorate dialogue mechanisms and led to a structured roadmap.

“This momentum was reinforced by the joint declaration signed on October 23, 2025,” the ambassador added.

Last year, the two countries signed an agreement to boost cooperation across different areas, including justice, economic development and migration.

The same declaration covered Belgium’s commitment to supporting Morocco’s Autonomy Plan.

In this context, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, signed a  joint declaration with his counterpart, Maxime Prevot, in which Belgium affirmed that it will act “from now on, on diplomatic and economic levels, in line with this position.”

Belgium further asserted in the joint declaration that it is aware of the “existential importance of the Sahara issue” for Morocco, and considers that the autonomy initiative constitutes the “most appropriate, serious, credible, and realistic basis to achieve a political solution.”

For his part, Bourita welcomed Belgium’s  position, describing it as a “clear recognition of the realism and legitimacy of the vision led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, for the definitive settlement of this regional dispute.”

Ambassador Ameur spoke of this declaration in his 21News interview, saying that it marked a turning point in bilateral ties to establish a shared, strategic vision for the future.

He also recalled Prevot’s most recent visit this month, which further consolidated “this dynamic and ensured follow-up on the commitments made.”

During this visit, Prevot reiterated Belgium’s position on the Sahara, describing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most credible basis for a political solution that is fair, durable, and acceptable to all parties.

Prevot said Belgium will reflect this stance through concrete diplomatic and economic steps, stressing that Brussels acts within the framework of international law, and that its approach aims to support a negotiated political outcome.
