Rabat – Rumors linking José Mourinho with a return to Real Madrid have resurfaced with increasing intensity in recent days.
According to Sport España and Marca, the Portuguese coach has emerged as one of the top contenders to take over the Madrid bench ahead of the 2026–2027 season.
The resurgence of these rumors is closely tied to the club’s current struggles. Real Madrid are on course to finish a second consecutive season without major accomplishments, despite an ambitious project led by Florentino Pérez and built around talented names such as Kylian Mbappé. This disappointing outcome has pushed the club’s leadership to begin exploring experienced managerial options capable of restoring authority and competitiveness.
‘I can’t guarantee what will happen’
Amid the growing speculation, Mourinho has addressed his future cautiously, without making any commitments. “I spoke about this two months ago, weeks ago, and a few days ago. I can’t guarantee what will happen,” he stated.
This statement reflects his measured approach, neither confirming nor dismissing the possibility of a return. Importantly, Marca also emphasizes that no contact has been made between Real Madrid and Mourinho so far, noting that “no one from the club has called the Portuguese coach.”
Focused on Benfica, not seeking an exit
Mourinho is currently managing Benfica, where he remains focused on finishing the season strongly. Reports from Sport Espana said that the 63-years-old has not expressed any intention to leave, maintaining professionalism and avoiding transfer speculation in public.
His contract runs until 2027, and his priority is to respect it. However, as indicated in the reports, he would still consider a move if a formal offer from Real Madrid were to arrive, leaving the situation open without actively pursuing it.
Why Mourinho’s name has returned
The renewed interest in Mourinho reflects deeper issues within Madrid’s current project. The club’s recent strategy, investing heavily in young talents and appointing a modern coach like Xabi Alonso, has not delivered the expected results.
