Morocco Foils Attempt to Smuggle 140,000 Ecstasy Pills at Tangier Med Port

Rabat – Moroccan security forces, in coordination with customs officers at Tangier Med Port, foiled an attempt to smuggle 140,000 ecstasy pills on Friday morning.

According to a security source, police discovered the drugs during routine border checks. They were carefully hidden inside specially built compartments within the metal structure of a utility vehicle carrying foreign license plates. Authorities also arrested the driver, a 38-year-old Spanish national of Dominican origin.

The suspect has been placed under judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. Investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals involved and to uncover the wider national and international networks linked to this operation.

Authorities said this case is part of ongoing security efforts to combat international drug trafficking and the smuggling of psychotropic substances.

Tangier Med Port is one of the largest and busiest ports in Africa and the Mediterranean, making it a frequent transit point for smuggling attempts. 

The port’s strategic location between Europe and Africa makes it attractive to trafficking networks seeking to move drugs and other illegal goods across borders.

Smugglers often use vehicles, trucks, and commercial shipments to conceal drugs. They often rely on sophisticated hiding methods to avoid detection. 

In response, Moroccan authorities have intensified surveillance and inspections at the port, leading to regular interceptions of similar operations.
