Agadir – US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and US Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan III are visiting the historical Moroccan city of Marrakech during Landau’s visit to the country.

The visit included the old medina and souks, highlighting the human and the cultural dimension of the long-standing partnership between Morocco and the US.

“America’s partnership with Morocco is about people, culture, and shared experiences, not only policy. From traditional crafts to local flavors, the visit offered a glimpse of the color, culture, and warmth that make Marrakesh such a special place,” the US embassy said.

The cultural stop in Marrakech came at the end of a strategically significant visit to Morocco, during which Landau held high-level talks in Rabat with Moroccan officials, including a meeting with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on April 29.

Those discussions reinforced Washington’s clear and consistent position on the Western Sahara.

During his Rabat visit, Landau reiterated that the US “recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara” and described the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as “the only basis for a just and lasting solution” to the regional dispute.

Landau also expressed the US commitment to support investments in the region, signaling that  Morocco-US relations go beyond diplomacy.

Morocco’s joining the Artemis Accords further showcased the deep strategic partnership, which Landau described as rooted in both historic ties and expanding economic and diplomatic alignment.

The Marrakech visit also followed another key moment in Landau’s trip, which is the inauguration of a new US consulate compound in Casablanca, where Duke Buchan III reaffirmed that Washington “stands with Morocco” and reiterated US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over its southern provinces.

During the ceremony, attended by Landau and Bourita, the ambassador described the new diplomatic facility in Casablanca as a concrete symbol of a deepening strategic partnership, not merely an infrastructure project.

He also stressed that Morocco’s Autonomy Plan remains, in Washington’s view, the only viable solution to the Sahara dispute, while highlighting expanding US economic engagement, including growing interest from American businesses in investment opportunities across the country, particularly in its southern provinces.
