Rabat – The International Publishing and Book Fair (SIEL) 2026 in Rabat sets aside a dedicated space for the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb, which uses the event to present its areas of work to a wider public.
The organization operates through five core programs that cover culture, education, communication and information sciences, social and human sciences, and natural sciences. Each day at the fair corresponds to one of these fields, with education selected for one of the key sessions.
In line with this, UNESCO’s participation in the fair has revolved around the presentation of reports, policy papers, and regional studies that tackle education systems and public policy.
Education at the center of UNESCO’s work in the Maghreb
Mariana Alcalay, Education Program Specialist at the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb in Rabat, described the office’s structure and mission.
“My name is Mariana Alcalay. I work as an Education Program Specialist at the UNESCO Regional Office for the Maghreb, based in Rabat,” she told Morocco World News today (MWN).
She added that the office works across five main domains.
“The UNESCO office for the Maghreb works in five main areas: culture, education, communication and information sciences, social and human sciences, and natural sciences,” Alcalay said.
According to her, the SIEL platform offers direct access to the organization’s work and documentation.
“We take advantage of this space at SIEL to present one program each day,” she noted.
Education policy and global goals
Alcalay described the education session as an opportunity to present key references and policy tools used by UNESCO in the region and beyond.
“Today focuses on education,” she said. “We feel pleased to share our knowledge, global, regional and national reports, policy documents and UNESCO materials for quality education for all, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals until 2030.”
A public space for policy and ideas
UNESCO’s participation at SIEL 2026 reflects a wider effort to connect education policy work with public dialogue. The organization’s presence at the fair makes policy documents and technical reports accessible to educators, students, and visitors.
Through this space, education remains central in discussions on development priorities in the region, within the broader framework of international goals set for 2030.
