Casablanca — French authorities have seized 2,692 kilograms of narcotics, mainly cannabis resin, and arrested two suspects as part of an investigation into an international drug trafficking operation linking Morocco and France.

The case stems from a preliminary investigation opened by the Lille prosecutor’s office on April 13, 2026. The investigation was assigned to the Lille Research Section, which began examining a network suspected of importing cannabis from Morocco into France through maritime and land routes.

According to investigators, part of the shipment was intended for the Lille metropolitan area.

The investigation was conducted on charges including participation in a criminal organization preparing offenses punishable by up to 10 years in prison, organized importation of narcotics, and the transport, acquisition, possession, distribution, sale, and use of illegal drugs.

The inquiry was carried out in coordination with Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). It led to a judicial operation on May 24 that was conducted simultaneously at four locations across France.

The operation involved officers from the Lille Research Section, supported by units from the Nord and Hérault departmental gendarmerie groups, the I/6 Mobile Gendarmerie Group in Nîmes, and the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN).

Authorities intercepted a vehicle upon its arrival at the port of Sète. Inside, investigators found 2,692 kilograms of narcotics, mostly cannabis resin, which were seized during the operation.

Two men were arrested and taken into custody. One was the driver of the vehicle carrying the drugs, while the other was suspected of acting as the network’s logistics coordinator.

A search of the second suspect’s home in the Paris region also resulted in the seizure of €34,000 in cash and a vehicle.

On May 28, the Lille prosecutor’s office opened a judicial investigation on the same charges. Both suspects were formally charged by an investigating judge.

One of the men was placed in pretrial detention by a judge responsible for custody decisions. The second was provisionally jailed pending a hearing scheduled for June 2.
