Rabat – Tottenham Hotspur agreed a massive deal with Newcastle United on Wednesday, signing Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali for $100.
The London team is preparing for the next season effectively, after surviving the drop last season. After successfully signing Meteus from West Ham United, their city rival who were relegated last season, Spurs have now made one of this summer’s shock Premier League moves to lure an elite midfielder. i
During his three seasons with Newcastle United, Tonali scored 5 goals and made 4 assists in 79 appearances in the Premier League in his career, despite missing much of the 2023-2024 season due to 10-month suspension for betting rule violations. He later returned to become one of the most important members in Eddie Howe’s squad and helped the London club win the Carabao Cup.
Since his first-team debut for Brescia in 2017, Tonali has been compared to footballing legend Andrea Pirlo who started at the same club as him.
“When I first saw Sandro play, there were definite links to Pirlo, without a doubt – and it’s not just the hair. There’s more to it than that,” Eddie Howe once said of the Italian.
“He’s definitely got those similar qualities in terms of build and style, but I think the thing that sets Sandro apart from anyone else was he could do all of those things technically and tactically, and looked really good, but it’s his athleticism as well, his ability to run.”
