Former Egypt international Ahmed Yasser rated Arab participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, claiming that Egypt performed better than the Moroccan team and deserved appreciation.
Despite Morocco reaching the quarter-finals and leaving the tournament with the best showing for Arab and African teams, Yasser gave Morocco a 7 out of 10 for their performance compared to an 8 out of 10 for the Egyptian side. He also gave Saudi Arabia 2 out of 10, while stressing that Qatar, Jordan, Iraq, Tunisia, and Algeria deserve 0 out of 10.
“Despite our exit before Morocco, people should understand something. Morocco started their project before us, and they already implemented it years ago, so it was natural for them to reach the semi-finals,” the former Egyptian player explained.
“What Morocco achieved in this tournament is considered a failure because, in the previous World Cup, they reached the semi-finals. They were supposed to build on that achievement and reach the semi-finals again, but they were eliminated in the quarter-finals.”
Ahmed Yasser emphasized that Egypt did not have a clear project. “What we achieved was thanks to the work of the coach Houssam Hassan, the consistency of the players, and their spirit. As for the real project, it is starting now with Hani Abo Rida and Houssam Hassan.”
He argued that the Egyptian national team is on its way to building a team for the future, stating, “We have started building a project now. New talents will emerge, and Houssam Hassan will give them opportunities, just as the Moroccan coach did with some of his players such as Samir Al-Murabit and Anas Salah Eddine.”
Yasser concluded his remarks by confirming that the pharaohs will show up at the 2030 World Cup with a better project and higher expectations. “If we were eliminated in the round of 16 in the 2030 World Cup, I would say it’s a failure,” he said. “On the other hand, if we reach the semi-finals, it will be the peak of success.”
