Following Barcelona’s efforts to sign a deal with Argentina striker Julián Álvarez, Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has officially announced Madrid club will keep the player this summer.
The 26-year-old has sparked headlines this summer during the 2026 World Cup after he stated that he wanted to “fulfil a dream,” comments widely interpreted as a desire to join Barcelona, even though he never mentioned the Catalan club by name.
Barcelona’s efforts to sign Alvarez
Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez has entered a crucial phase after club president Joan Laporta confirmed that the club has already submitted an official offer to Atletico Madrid.
The latest Barcelona transfer news places the Argentine striker at the top of Hansi Flick’s wishlist, with Barcelona pushing to complete one of the biggest deals of the summer.
“We have made a very significant offer; if they are willing to accept it, fantastic, but it won’t be unlimited,” Laporta said.
“We have to make a decision. Whether we maintain the offer or not depends on how these last two weeks of July unfold.”
Atlético Madrid’s position
The club’s CEO has emphasized that Atlético is the right place for Julian, and the club won’t accept any offer for him.
“My position is clear, the club’s position is clear. We’ve made it known to the player, his representatives, and the president of Barcelona,” He said.
Gil added that he has “absolutely no doubt that Atlético is the right place in the world for Julián, and that Julián is the perfect centre-forward for Atlético Madrid. We want to keep him.”
“We didn’t accept an offer of €100 million, and we will not accept one of €150 million or even €200 million for Julián Álvarez. We want to keep Julian,” Gil has concluded.
