Agadir – Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch launched the services of the Tamanar Community Hospital in Essaouira Province today.

The facility aims to boost local healthcare infrastructure and improve access to medical services.

Minister of Health and Social Protection Amine Tehraoui attended the launch ceremony, alongside Essaouira Province Governor Mohammed Rachid, as well as several elected officials and regional, provincial, and local authorities.

The inauguration was accompanied by the presentation of two major hospital projects aimed at expanding healthcare capacity in the province: the rehabilitation and extension of the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Provincial Hospital Centre and the construction of a new provincial hospital in Essaouira city.

According to Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the initiatives are part of the implementation of the royal directives aimed at establishing “an efficient, sustainable and equitable health system, ensuring access to quality health services for all citizens.”

During the visit, Akhannouch said that the government is working to accelerate the rehabilitation of healthcare infrastructure and bring medical services closer to citizens.

The Head of Government stressed the importance of improving patient reception, guidance, and care conditions, while promoting territorial equity in access to healthcare services, in line with the royal instructions.

Tamanar hospital strengthens local healthcare access

The newly launched Tamanar Community Hospital is expected to improve healthcare access for local populations by providing basic and specialized medical services closer to residents and reducing the need to travel to other cities for treatment.

The facility was built on an area exceeding 30,000 square meters, with a total investment of more than MAD 126 million ($13 million). It is designed to serve a population of around 86,000 inhabitants across 15 local communities.

The hospital will operate with a staff of 83 healthcare professionals tasked with providing medical services adapted to the needs of the local population.

The Ministry said the facility will contribute to reducing territorial disparities in healthcare access and strengthening the province’s healthcare offering.

Expansion of Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah hospital

During the visit, Akhannouch also reviewed progress on the rehabilitation and expansion project of the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Provincial Hospital Centre in Essaouira.

The first phase of the project covers a land area exceeding 31,000 square meters, with a built-up area of around 9,000 square meters. The project represents an investment of more than MAD 83 million ($8.8 million) and will increase the hospital’s capacity to 167 beds.

Works are scheduled to begin at the end of July and are expected to last around eight months.

The project will expand the hospital’s medical services to include general medicine, surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics, laboratory services, maternity care, neonatal care, functional rehabilitation, and orthopedic surgery.

It will also include upgraded technical, logistical, and administrative facilities designed to improve the quality of care provided to patients.

New MAD 890 million hospital planned in Essaouira

Akhannouch also received a briefing on the project to build a new hospital centre in Essaouira city, with construction expected to begin before the end of 2026.

The future hospital will be built on a plot of nearly 10 hectares, with a covered area of approximately 48,000 square meters. It will have a capacity of 280 beds and represents a projected investment of around MAD 890 million ($94.96 million).

The facility will include several medical, technical, and administrative units, including hospital services, medical-technical departments, logistics facilities, an operating block, intensive care and resuscitation units, neonatology services, outpatient consultations, medical imaging, laboratories, pharmacy services, and emergency departments.

The ministry said the project will provide an integrated and multidisciplinary healthcare offering while strengthening the province’s hospital network.
