Rabat – The Argentina football team returned home after their painful 1-0 loss against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, with captain Lionel Messi notably absent.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) had earlier reported that several team players would not be travelling back to Argentina.

Coach Lionel Scaloni and the rest of the team were welcomed by a military band and a red carpet.

Despite the rainy weather, thousands of fans gathered outside the AFA to greet the albicileste, holding flags and blue-and-white umbrellas to protect them from the drizzle.

“I had the joy of seeing Argentina become champions in 78. I was very little; I was five years old and in 86 with Maradona, in 2022 with Leo. I am very proud of this team that gave their everything to the Argentine,” said a fan during the celebrations.

Buenos Aires’s traditional celebration site was lit up with fireworks and chants honoring the team; however, police moved in with rubber bullets, water cannons, and tear gas after clashes broke out at the Obelisk late Sunday. Authorities confirmed 15 detentions.

It seems that the Albiceleste could also be in trouble, as FIFA is expected to open an investigation into Argentina regarding incidents that occurred during the World Cup final.

The investigation centers on several key clashes after the final whistle. FIFA is reviewing Leandro Paredes’ red card for violent conduct during Spain’s celebrations alongside an incident where Nahuel Molina punched Spanish midfielder Rodri.

Beyond the physical fights, FIFA is also expected to look into the Argentine delegation’s behavior during the trophy ceremony. Several players turned their backs as Spain lifted the World Cup.
