Rabat – Argentine goalkeeper Damian Emiliano Martínez has reportedly questioned his continuity with the Argentine national team after the painful loss against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
His message came after the reception of the fans at Ezeiza, where supporters gathered all around the AFA holding flags and blue-and-white umbrellas despite the rainy weather.
Martinez expressed his disappointment on social networks after failing to secure a second World Cup championship. “I dreamed that we could win it and bring it back to Argentina and make history once again,” he said in a post on Instagram.
The 33-year-old questioned his continuity with the Albiceleste in the same post: “The truth is, the pain is hard to explain; there is a lot to reflect on and to see how we move forward and if it is time to take a step aside.”
The uncertainty about Martinez’s future with Argentina only makes it harder for fans to believe that their team would not be the same in the next World Cup in 2030, with stars like Lionel Messi having just played their last World Cup.
Martinez’s performance during the World Cup was crucial in all group stages, helping Argentina reach the final. In that match, he made several impressive saves against Spain before a stunning goal from Ferran Torres changed the outcome.
“I am really sorry; I tried my best to help my country and my teammates,” he added at the end of his message.
