Former Italy manager Roberto Mancini is set for a second turn as Gli Azzurri’s head coach. Mancini will reportedly replace Gennaro Gattuso, who left in April after a World Cup qualifying loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The appointment comes amid a crisis in the Italian federation following the collapse of talks with Andrea Pirlo and Guardiola, as well as the recent resignation of Paolo Maldini and Leonardo Araujo.
Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano said on his socials that “Roberto Mancini has agreed to become Italy’s new head coach.”
“New project set to begin after president Malago stopped Pirlo’s deal right before signing due to his collaboration with Russian brands.”
The 61-year-old is stepping back into the manager’s role for the national team. In his first spell, he led Italy in 58 matches, winning EURO 2020 against England and setting a world record in men’s international football history by going 37 consecutive matches without a loss.
Mancini has also managed top clubs like Inter Milan, Fiorentina, and Manchester City, where he won the Premier League title in the 2011-12 season.
