Rabat – Morocco and Mauritania held the fifth session of their Joint Military Commission yesterday in Rabat. This annual meeting, first launched in January 2020, aims to boost defense cooperation between the two nations.
Morocco and Mauritania have reaffirmed their commitment to regional security through these recent high-level military meetings.
General Mohammed Berrid, Morocco’s Inspector General of the Armed Forces, met with Mauritania’s Chief of Staff Mokhtar Bolle Chaabane to discuss boosting cooperation on border security, managing migration, and countering cross-border crime.
These efforts are seen as essential for stabilizing the region and tackling shared challenges.
The Mauritanian delegation also met with Abdellatif Loudiyi, Morocco’s minister responsible for national defense administration, further underlining both countries’ dedication to joint security measures.
Though Morocco and Mauritania established military ties in 1971, a formal framework emerged with a memorandum of understanding in 2006, leading to the Joint Military Commission.
While this commission first convened in 2020, the recent session reflects the sustained focus on border control and collaborative security initiatives.
In November, General Mohammed Berrid met with Mauritania’s Minister of Defense, Hanena Ould Sidi, in Marrakech during the Marrakech Air Show. The discussions focused on strengthening military cooperation and exploring new avenues for collaboration across various defense sectors.
The meeting embodies the longstanding military partnership between Morocco and Mauritania, reaffirming their shared commitment to tackling regional challenges and security threats.
